Deputy Director, Marine Ecology & Ecosystems Programme

About the role

The Deputy Director will support the Director’s Office of the Marine Ecology and Ecosystems Programme (MEEP) within the Fisheries, Aquaculture and Marine Ecosystems Division of the Pacific Community. This senior position provides strategic direction, implementation support and coordination across the three programmes – Coastal Fisheries and Aquaculture, Oceanic Fisheries and Marine Ecology – and cross‑cutting projects serving 22 Pacific Island Countries and Territories.

Key responsibilities

• Assist the Director in setting and monitoring strategic objectives for MEEP.
• Lead programme planning, budgeting and performance reporting.
• Coordinate activities among the three programmes and ensure alignment with SPC’s overall mission.
• Facilitate stakeholder engagement with member countries, partners and donors.
• Oversee scientific research and knowledge‑exchange initiatives in marine ecology, fisheries science and ecosystem conservation.
• Represent SPC in regional forums and contribute to policy development.

Required profile

• Advanced degree (PhD or Master’s) in marine ecology, environmental science or a related field.
• Significant experience in programme or project management within an international or multi‑country context.
• Proven leadership experience in scientific or technical programmes.
• Strong understanding of Pacific marine ecosystems and fisheries.
